Metadata Management System (MMS) for a Leading OH based Bank

Client is a leading fortune 500 financial services company with locations around the US and other parts of the World. Their headquarters is located in Cleveland, OH. Client provides various financial services including Retail Banking, Capital Markets and Industrial Financing.

Client Problem: Client has had a long-standing need for a robust metadata management system(MMS) that is able to present organized meta data at an enterprise level. The number of productionized tables at the time was already over 1.2 million. Each year, Client's data environment grows by approximately 14%. Most of this growth is due to development teams not having an understanding of what already exists, resulting in significant redundancies. The Strategic Data Architecture Initiatives (SDAI) team at Client was chartered with developing this robust metadata environment and providing a solution for all employees at Client to access the information about the company's data assets. Critical to the success of this solution was friendly search capabilities to find what was already available in the environment and organize those searches in a logical way that can support the highest level executive to the most granular information that an application developer would need in his development work. The SDAI team chose Cognos as the end-user reporting tool with an Oracle backend with Exeros and Ab Initio as the ETL tools. Cognos was used to implement the complex searching and view capabilities.

MSA's Solution: MSA Group architected a solution with robust search capabilities and a user friendly dashboard with tabs and screens to view the metadata in a variety of formats including business, technical, physical domain and more. Though the project had failed on four different occassions prior to Client engaging MSA, it took MSA a single iterations after the initial design to implement the solution and help Client in rolling it out enterprise-wide. MSA ensured the complete success of the project through working with and guiding Client's data architects, ETL developers, participating relational and dimensional modeling of the metadata, creating robust Cognos reports and overseeing metadata aggregation from a variety of sources for the this project.
