Metadata Management System (MMS) for KeyBank
KEYBANK (Key) is a leading fortune 500 financial services company with locations around the US and other parts of the World. Their headquarters is located in Cleveland, OH. KeyBank provides various financial services including Retail Banking, Capital Markets and Industrial Financing.
Client Problem: Key has had a long-standing need for a robust metadata management system(MMS) that is able to present organized meta data at an enterprise level. The number of productionized tables at the time was already over 1.2 million. Each year, Key’s data environment grows by approximately 14%. Most of this growth is due to development teams not having an understanding of what already exists, resulting in significant redundancies. The Strategic Data Architecture Initiatives team at Key was chartered with developing this robust metadata environment and providing a solution for all employees at Key to access the information about the company’s data assets. Critical for this solution was friendly search capabilities to find what was already available in the environment and organize those searches in a logical way that can support the highest level executive to the most granular information that an application developer would need in his development work. The chartered project chose Cognos as the end-user reporting tool with an Oracle backend and Exeros and ab Initio were used in the data migration process. Cognos was used to implement the complex searching and view capabilities.
MSA's Solution: MSA Group architected a solution with robust search capabilities along with a complex user friendly dashboard with tabs and screens to encompass the full variety of metadata forms including business, technical, physical domain and more. Though the project had failed on four(4) different occassions prior to Key engaging MSA, it took MSA a single iterations after the initial design to implement the solution and help Key in rolling it out enterprise-wide.
MSA was charged with ensuring the complete success of the project and this entailed working with and guiding Key's data architects, ETL developers, relational and dimensional modeling of the metadata, creating robust Cognos reports and overseeing metadata consolidation for the purposes of this project.
